Arthritis Exercises

Arthritis can be caused by a wide variety of things, and it the leading cause of mobility issues in older individuals. It is caused by inflammation or degeneration of the joints, and can affect generally any part of the body. Arthritis tends to be characterized by stiffness of the joints, swelling, tenderness, and sometimes even clubbing around the affected joint. Arthritis sufferers often have a limited range of motion making it hard to move or use the area of the body that has been affected by this inflammation.

There are different types of arthritis that can be caused by a number of different factors. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is caused by degeneration of the joints – not inflammation. The degeneration that causes osteoarthritis is generally caused by some sort of trauma, such as a sports injury, but can also be caused by obesity. Osteoarthritis is generally known to be the arthritis of the hips, knees and ankles.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints with inflammation, pain, and decreased mobility. It is an autoimmune disease that can sometimes affect muscles and organs as well as joints. There is no known cause for this disease; however, it is thought that smoking cigarettes, environmental factors, and genetics can play large roles in the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

Some less common forms of arthritis include: inflammatory arthritis, caused by inflammation of the joints; septic arthritis, which is caused by a bacterial infection of the joints; and juvenile, which can appear in children and young adults. Gout is also thought to be a form of arthritis due to its inflammatory characteristics.

There is no cure for arthritis, so it is important to find a pain management system that works for you. There are anti-inflammatory medications that can be used, as well as exercises that can help to increase range of motion in the affected joints and reduce pain.

Some exercise examples include aerobic activities, yoga, and muscle-strengthening routines. You should try to keep with exercises that are low to moderate impact, and should always ensure you are not participating in activities that can aggravate your affected joints. Aerobic equipment use such as treadmills and exercise bikes are low impact and can be a great way to help strengthen your joints and muscles that are affected by the pain caused by your arthritis. There specific poses available in yoga programs that are targeted at reducing pain and reducing painful flare-ups of your arthritis. These poses will help to strengthen the affected joints and muscles, while increasing your range of motion.
