Osteoporosis and Aerobics

Osteoporosis is most common in the elderly population, and is characterized by the weakening of the bones. It is also found to affect women more than men, and Caucasians and Asians more so than other races. The bones become porous as a result of calcium depletion and loss of phosphorous and other minerals, which causes them to become brittle and weak making them susceptible to fracture.

Bone fractures in the hips and spine can be very damaging and costly for any individual. Treating osteoporosis can be done by consuming a vitamin-rich diet and by participating in an exercise program. A person suffering from osteoporosis can often go without diagnosis until they have obtained a fracture. These fractures often occur when doing everyday activities, and generally affect a weight-bearing bone such as the hip, wrist, or spine.

There are several treatments available for those suffering from osteoporosis. There are a number of emerging drugs that can help to reduce the depletion of calcium and other minerals in the bones, and hormone therapy is sometimes recommended as well. A healthy lifestyle is the key in the prevention of osteoporosis, and with diagnosis lifestyle change is not only very important but also sometimes necessary at the onset of osteoporosis. Individuals need to ensure that they are getting enough calcium and vitamin D through diet and supplements, regular exercise, and the addition of soy to the diet once diagnosed.

The use of strength equipment is beneficial to help with prevention and treatment, as there are many exercises involved in strength training that are aimed at increasing bone density. Strength exercises also help to promote balance, which can be an essential factor in preventing falls which may result in fractures.

One of the most ideal physical programs that can be used to prevent and treat osteoporosis includes a variety of aerobic exercises. Weight-bearing aerobics are done on your feet with your bones supporting your weight. Examples of this type of aerobics include such things as walking, dancing, using the elliptical, low-impact aerobic routines, and stair climbers. Aquatic aerobics are not known to assist with maintaining bone density; however, they can be ideal for those who are in rehabilitation from a fracture caused by their osteoporosis. It is important to choose and participate in an exercise program that is aimed at your safety. Participating in high-impact aerobics such running, jogging or jumping up and down can cause fractures for those suffering from osteoporosis, and should be avoided.
